How to Ride the San Francisco Cable Cars - A Visitors Guide

Nothing says San Francisco more than the clang of the cable car bell as it climbs to top of one of the city's famous steep streets. But before you hop on board, take the time to read through our tips to get the most our your ride. From tickets to schedules, we give you the lowdown on the most famous way to get around the city.

Dating back all the way to the 1870's, San Francisco Cable Cars have a long history serving commuters in the city. Today they are now the world's last manual operating system in existence.
* They are fun to experience, but don't expect a smooth and modern ride. But that's all part of the fun, as you feel like you stepped back in history as you ride across the city.
* You can hang on to the special poles (just like you see in the movies), but be very aware of potential hazards and pay attention to the gripman who is always in charge.
* Cable cars run seven days a week, and there are three lines with the main hub at Powell and Market streets, where two lines originate. Riders can board at any turntable at the beginning and end of each route or keep an eye out for brown signs marking designated stops.
* Tickets can be purchased with cash from the conductor on board each cable car. They cost $5 each way for adults and youths. Senior citizens can ride for only a dollar between 9 pm and 7 am. If you want to take multiple rides, you should probably opt for a Passport for one day ($13), two days ($20), or seven days ($26). These allow for travel on streetcars, buses, and cable cars.
