When you step into Grace Cathedral, located on Nob Hill in San Francisco, just a few uphill blocks from the Inn at Union Square, you’ll be hard-pressed not to be impressed. Highlights include the Doors of Paradise (replicas of doors from the Renaissance), the carillon with 44 English bells, the 66 stained glass windows that were created by five different artists, the main organ with more than 7,400 pipes, and the AIDS Chapel and Haring altarpiece. Other chapels include the Chapel of the Nativity and Chapel of Grace. You’ll also have a chance to see much more of Grace Cathedral by signing up for the Grand Tour. The 90-minute behind-the-scenes tour includes the inside of the Chapel of Grace, a look at the church’s extensive vestment collection, and views of the nave from the Gallery. If you’re up to it, you can walk up the South Tower’s 94 stairs to the top where the breathtaking San Francisco skyline will greet you. Tickets are $25 and everyone over 10 years old is welcome.

Grace Cathedral has quite a history. It came into being in 1849 during the Gold Rush days as small Grace Chapel. A larger version was built years later but was lost in 1906 when the San Francisco earthquake hit and wreaked havoc on much of the city, mainly via fire. The current spot where Grace Cathedral stands was donated by the Crocker Family who made their fortune in the railroad and banking industries. Construction began in 1927 and additions were made all the way until 1964. Fans of architecture will appreciate the cathedral’s classic French Gothic style.
