San Francisco's Best Wine Tasting Spaces
From Russian Hill and Fisherman’s Wharf to Portrero Hill and West Portal, there are many great wine tasting spaces that dot the hilly landscape of the Fog City. There are rooms and tastings for all budgets in mind, and each one has a different vibe or feel. Are you in for a more traditional session, or a trendier, more modern tasting?
For starters, you don’t need to travel very far-the Inn at Union Square hosts a complimentary cheese and wine tasting each evening. Make the parlor your first stop on the circuit! Then, starting from the north of city in Russian Hill, the Wattle Creek Winery and Tasting Room is a city-wide favorite. The staff are nearly encyclopedic with their viticultural knowledge, and the prices are moderate. The space itself is just off Ghiradelli Square, adding to its old-world charm-kick back and relax on their patio with a glass or two. Just down the road to the east, JAQK Cellars is a sleek, modern option. It’s tucked into the second floor of an office building, which lends it a secretive feel-but your hard work in searching will pay off. JAQK Cellars offers moderately priced wines and great food and wine pairings all week; they’re closed on the weekend.
To the south-SoMa and beyond-exist even more great spaces. The Bluxome Street Winery is a hit with tourists and locals alike: well-priced wines, an expansive, cavernous interior, live music, and a great charcuterie and cheese plate! Not to mention free parking, which is sort of unicorn status in the neighborhood. Around the corner, The Wine Club is a simple wine retail shop with extremely knowledgeable staff, huge selection, and Friday night $5 tastings. Further afield in West Portal, The San Francisco Wine Trading Company is similar to the aforementioned SoMa establishment-an incredible selection of local, regional, and international wines with low-key tastings every Saturday evening. The SF Wine Trading Co. also boats a great selection of “unique and hard-to-find” liquors, well curated by the proprietor. Whatever your speed and wherever you are in San Francisco, there’s a glass waiting for you, somewhere.
