This February, acclaimed Dutch conductor Jaap van Zweden will make his debut at Davies Symphony Hall. The Amsterdam native made history at the mere age of nineteen when he became the youngest concertmaster at the city's Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. From there, the rising star continued onto the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra as the chief conductor and then onto various Dutch and Belgian orchestras, including the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and the Residentie Orchestra of the Hague.
As of late, van Zweden has been spending his time as the Music Director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. His orchestral talents will come to light on February 12 and 14 as he leads Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony with the San Francisco Symphony. Rising violinist Simone Lamsma— who's worked under van Zweden's wing as his protégé and compatriot—will take the stage as the soloist in Sibelius's Violin Concerto.
Concert goers will relish the opportunity to see these two musical talents collide to perform one of Tchaikovsky's best symphonies. Tickets begin at $42 for the second tier and can be purchased through the orchestra's website at www.sfsymphony.org. So come and enjoy Musical America's 2012 Conductor of the Year; orchestra aficionados will feel moved from this impassioned musical masterpiece.
