San Francisco Symphony Performs
Since December 1911, the San Francisco Symphony has been rejuvenating the city’s cultural life with its vast musical performances. Classical enthusiasts from near and far venture into this historic, bay area city to witness its award-winning renditions of some of the greatest masterpieces known to exist.

On Thursday, May 23rd, conductor David Robertson will lead a two-hour concert featuring four astonishing 20th century works. Beginning with Elliott Carter’s Variations for Orchestra, the performance will include two works from French composer Joseph-Maurice Ravel and one work from American composter George Gershwin.

Gershwin first performed Rhapsody in Blue, a combination of classic and jazz elements, during 1924 for Ravel’s birthday party. Ravel’s Concerto for the Left Hand incorporates jazz undertones, while his 1920 La Valse pays homage to the classic waltz. Variations for Orchestra, which opens the program, rounds up the two-hour concert at Davies Symphony Hall.

Conductor Robertson will lead these performances, starting at 8 p.m. Robertson, who has been with the Saint Louis Symphony since 2011, was named Conductor of the Year by Musical America in 2000. Come, sit down, and let some of the greatest 20th century works take you away.
