There’s nothing quite as distinct as a Motown song. Incredible individual singers like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye and such one-of-a-kind groups as The Supremes, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Gladys Knight & the Pips, and the Jackson 5 came from its ranks. The man behind it all was Berry Gordy, Jr., who has taken his singular story and turned it into a major Broadway show called "Motown: The Musical.” This electric jukebox experience is still going strong in New York. However, the national touring company is coming to San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre from August 15 to September 28, 2014. The energy that the show creates is palpable thanks to a stellar cast of over 40 singers and dancers who perform nearly 60 classic hits, including "I Want You Back,” "What’s Going On,” "My Girl,” "Dancing in the Street,” "Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” and "I Heard It Through The Grapevine."

With its catchy tunes and high-energy dance routines, "Motown: The Musical” is the perfect show for just about everyone. There’s very little adult language, making it appropriate for kids 10 years of age and older. Unfortunately, no one under 5 will be admitted to the show. And the Orpheum Theatre, which is within close proximity of the Inn at Union Square, is the perfect place to see it. Since 1926, the historic venue has been home to all types of entertainment, from vaudeville and silent films to plays and, of course, musicals.
