A Columbus Day Weekend Tradition
Celebrate Italia at the 145th Annual Italian Heritage Parade in San Francisco’s North Beach district. The oldest parade celebrating the accomplishments of Italians and Italian Americans began as a tribute to Christopher Columbus-the "first Italian American." Each year a young lady is crowned Queen Isabella-so named for the monarch who sponsored Columbus’s exploratory voyage that led to the European discover of the Americas.
The parade kicks off at Fisherman’s Wharf at Jefferson and Stockton streets. It heads down Columbus Avenue and ends at Washington Square. In addition to Queen Isabella and her Court of Princesses, Duchesses, and Maidens, parade participants include Italian school clubs, marching bands, floats, and Christopher Columbus himself!
Stay for Post-parade Festivities
Parade viewing is free and available all along the route, but it's always a good idea to arrive early to get a primo spot. The fun continues afterwards in Washington Square Park, next to St. Peter and Paul Church. There will be lots of family-friendly activities, so definitely bring the kids. Be sure to check out the display of Ferrari sports cars too.
Parking will be difficult in the popular North Beach neighborhood. So be sure to catch a cab or enjoy a walk to the parade from the Inn at Union Square. Walking around this colorful quarter is really fun -Take a break at one of the many cafes and restaurants, which serve genuine Italian pastas, pizzas, lattes, and more.
