In its festive 10th season, this San Francisco mainstay is the perfect way to end your week. With a free concert, craft station for kids, and all sorts of other after-hours “happenings,” de Young Friday Nights have become a treasured Bay Area tradition. Week after week, the famous museum treats visitors to specially themed hands-on fun, art demonstrations, lectures, workshops, exhibition tours, film screenings, dance and theater performances. Regular museum admission ($10) is not included, but everything else is, making it one of the best free events in the city. There’s even a prix-fixe menu at the café, with specialty cocktails and extended hours at the 9th-floor observation tower, with a jaw-dropping 360-degree view of San Francisco. Themes for the next two Friday Nights at de Young are:

Bridges
April 18th at 6pm

This week’s theme centers around The Bay Bridge: A Work in Progress, 1933-1936, with a curator lecture by Jim Ganz in Koret Auditorium at 7pm. Live music from The Marcus Shelby Ensemble and Guests will start at 6:30pm in Wilsey Court. Before that, Ben Davis will conduct a presentation about “The Bay Lights,” an incredible LED light sculpture on the Bay Bridge through March 2015 that’s the largest of its kind in the world.

Feathers & Fedoras: A Night of Fashion, Music, and Dancing
April 25th at 6pm

With San Francisco style as far as the eye can see, this Friday Night at de Young is all about the culture of fun. In addition to fashion-centric shows, activities and presentations, Leslie Ross will deliver a guest lecture about the role of text in and as an art itself.
