Since 1912, this 12k foot race has attracted runners of all types donning anything and everything, from silly costumes to wigs and much more.

Its namesake, Bay to Breakers, pays homage to the long-standing course thousands of runners take from the northeast side of the city to the west end. The Embarcadero, where the race begins, is considered the “bay” area, continuing until the runners reach the “breakers” of Ocean Beach.

Beginning bright and early Sunday, May 19th, world-class and amateur athletes will make their way to the start line, gearing up for the 7 a.m. starting pistol. Participants select their Start Line via a corral system, which are served on a first-come, first-served basis. Each corral has its own estimated finish time and length, the shortest of which is under 59 minutes.

Sport photo, the official photographer, will take souvenir photos to commemorate the celebratory occasion. Classical enthusiasts from near and far venture into this historic, bay area city to witness its award-winning renditions of some of the greatest masterpieces known to exist.

On Thursday, May 23rd, conductor David Robertson will lead a two-hour concert featuring four astonishing 20th century works. Beginning with Elliott Carter’s Variations for Orchestra, the performance will include two works from French composer Joseph-Maurice Ravel and one work from American composter George Gershwin.

Gershwin first performed Rhapsody in Blue, a combination of classic and jazz elements, during 1924 for Ravel’s birthday party. Ravel’s Concerto for the Left Hand incorporates jazz undertones, while his 1920 La Valse pays homage to the classic waltz. Variations for Orchestra, which opens the program, rounds up the two-hour concert at Davies Symphony Hall.
Conductor Robertson will lead these performances, starting at 8 p.m. Robertson, who has been with the Saint Louis Symphony since 2011, was named Conductor of the Year by Musical America in 2000. Join the San Francisco Ballet as they perform Christopher Wheeldon’s spectacular realization of this classic Grimms Brothers and Perrault fairy tale. A co-production with the Dutch National Ballet, this version offers some unique enhancements, giving added dimension to this timeless story. There is the music of Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev, Basil Twist’s intriguing puppetry, along with sets and costumes designed by the Julian Crouch, best-known for his work on the Broadway production of The Addams Family. Mr. Crouch has also worked extensively with the Metropolitan Opera.

This version of Cinderella is based on Prokoiev’s ballet, which debuted in 1945. Considered among the most melodic ballet compositions ever conceived, it has remained popular with dancers ever since. Prokoiev’s production predates the Walt Disney movie by five years. The version performed by the San Francisco Ballet puts a creative twist on Walt’s original. With its ample and lavish scenery, along with the comic portrayal of the stepsisters, it is the perfect vehicle for Wheeldon to showcase his vision. The San Francisco Ballet is under the direction of Helgi Tomasson and annually presents over 100 performances both at home and abroad. The company has a solid mix of seasoned performers as well as rising young talent, and always seeks to find the most unique pieces for interpretation. Cinderella runs Friday May 3 through Sunday May 12. The next phase of the AC World Series, the precursor to the America’s Cup yacht racing competition, begins October 2 in San Francisco. This series of matches, or fleet races, will lead up to the America’s Cup that will be held in San Francisco staring July 4, 2013. San Francisco’s own Golden Gate Yacht Club will be the defending team for that set of races. The America’s Cup was first awarded in 1851 to the scooner America, captained by the Royal Yacht Squadron, following a race around the Isle of Wight. American yachters then went on the longest winning streak in sports. It lasted until 1983, when Australia II, from The Royal Perth Yacht Club, famously captured the cup.
The America’s Cup World Series began in 2011 as a sort of warm-up and prequalification for the main competition. For the World Series races, a specific type of boat, the AC45, is used by all teams. It’s a wingsail catamaran, and is smaller than the AC72 which will be used in next summer’s America’s Cup races. Yes, that’s right—this winter you can catch the century’s most popular musical, Wicked, at the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco. Based on the 1995 book by Gregory Macguire, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the musical debuted on Broadway in 2003. Currently the 12th longest running show on Broadway, the original production won 3 Tony Awards and 6 Drama Desk Awards. The show was also awarded a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album in 2005.

The story begins before the events in The Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum’s classic book that was turned into the 1939 film of the same name. Toward the end, the plot parallels the original. Told from the perspective of Glinda (The Good Witch of the North) and Elphaba (The Wicked Witch of the West), the show’s full title is Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz. It’s most memorable songs include “Popular,” and “Defying Gravity.” An interesting bit of trivia: Wicked had its try out run in San Francisco, where it debuted on June 10, 2003. It returns to San Francisco January 23, 2013.

Founded in 1946 as part of the All-American Football Conference (AAFC), the 49ers were the city’s first professional sports team. They joined the NFL in 1950 along with two other former AAFC squads, the Cleveland Browns, and the Baltimore Colts. Since then the 49ers have gone on to become one of the most successful franchises in the NFL, winning five Super Bowls. The quest for a sixth is led by quarterback Alex Smith, wide receiver Michael Crabtree, and tight end Vernon Davis.

Opponents this season include the New York Giants, the Miami Dolphins, and the Arizona Cardinals. The latter has become a bitter rival since the team moved from the National Football Conference’s Eastern Division to the Western Division, which the 49ers have been in since the 1970 AFL/NFL merger. In 2014, the club will move into a new stadium. So, the chance to experience Niners football in the stadium they’ve called home since 1970 is slipping away faster than running back Frank Gore from an opposing defense. More details, including the 49ers football schedule, team news, ticket, and stadium information can be found at 49ers.com.

Extended Stay Package

Everyone wants to find hotel deals in San Francisco. A modern marvel of engineering and an object of incredible beauty, the Golden Gate Bridge is truly a sight to behold. If you catch it on a foggy day, its towers appear to disappear in the clouds, and on a sunny day, its sweeping cables draw lines in the sky that seem to go on for miles.

Spanning the Golden Gate, the opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean, its signature international orange color perfectly contrasts with the deep, cold waters below. A day before cars first trekked 1.7 miles across the bridge, people walked and roller skated across it during the opening day celebration. Today, you'll see endless crowds driving, biking, skating, and strolling across its pedestrian walkways.

No matter what angle you're viewing from, you'll have a chance to take magnificent pictures. To experience its beauty from afar, catch the views from Golden Gate Park or Marin highlands. For a quick glimpse, take a car over from Marin to San Francisco for a $6 toll. In addition to the common tourist spots, check out Hawk Hill, Kirby Cove, and Fort Point; each provides unique glimpses of this massive, majestic structure. San Francisco’s Union Square is one of the world’s
premiere shopping districts and boasts a massive collection of department
stores, designer boutiques, art galleries, and San Francisco specialty shops. A large plaza
surrounded by a neighborhood of retail stores, theatres and hotels, Union
Square is a thriving, cosmopolitan epicenter of downtown San Francisco and a
major tourist attraction. Also popular with locals, San Francisco’s Union
Square is home to art installations and impromptu street performers, many
varieties of restaurants and numerous entertainment options. This part of the
city never sleeps, and you can find oodles of live entertainment, from music
concerts and off-Broadway acts to improv comedy and dance clubs. Two cable car
lines serve the neighborhood for easy access, but when you stay at our Union
Square hotel, you are just steps away from one of San Francisco’s most exciting

Giants baseball is big news in San Francisco, and you can get in on the
action by attending a home game while staying at the Inn at Union Square. One
of the oldest teams in baseball, the San Francisco Giants have won more games
than any other American sports team and can claim six World Series
Championships. Beloved by an ardent fanbase in the Bay Area, the San Francisco
Giants play at AT&T Park, their home since 2000 in the South Beach
neighborhood. With gorgeous views of the city skyline and San Francisco Bay,
AT&T Park has a classic design. Its old-fashioned atmosphere appeals to
baseball fans old and young, including many celebrities such as Robin Williams,
who is an ardent SF Giants baseball fan. The San Francisco Giants’ baseball
schedule runs from March through October, and our hotel concierge would be
happy to assist you with information on tickets, game schedules and
transportation to AT&T Park.
