San Francisco TheatreThe best of Broadway is coming to a theater in SF. Yes, that’s right—this winter you can catch the century’s most popular musical, Wicked, at the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco. Based on the 1995 book by Gregory Macguire, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the musical debuted on Broadway in 2003. Currently the 12th longest running show on Broadway, the original production won 3 Tony Awards and 6 Drama Desk Awards. The show was also awarded a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album in 2005.
The story begins before the events in The Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum’s classic book that was turned into the 1939 film of the same name. Toward the end, the plot parallels the original. Told from the perspective of Glinda (The Good Witch of the North) and Elphaba (The Wicked Witch of the West), the show’s full title is Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz. It’s most memorable songs include “Popular,” and “Defying Gravity.” An interesting bit of trivia: Wicked had its try out run in San Francisco, where it debuted on June 10, 2003. It returns to San Francisco January 23, 2013.
The best part? The Inn at Union Square is just minutes from the theater!
